We’ve all had our moments of existential dread. Whether it’s feeling stuck on the hamster wheel of life or left behind as friends reach relationship and career milestones that for you seem like pipe dreams, there are many different paths that lead to asking, “what’s the point?” But why is it that some of us seem to be able to chug along brightly going through our morning routines and taking our little walks and somehow remain positive (or at least motivated) while others are always lamenting their Sisyphean struggles? Per usual, we think astrology might have something to say about this. Here’s our take on the four signs most likely to be on the verge of an existential crisis (hint: it’s all the mutable signs!)
4 Signs Always on the Verge of an Existential Crisis
1. Gemini (May 21 – June 20)
Geminis are a restless bunch. Ruled by communication planet Mercury, their M.O. is to be the curious child, always asking, “Why?” And that’s not to say those whys are always tinged with existential dread, quite the contrary in fact. Geminis are often the life of the party boosting everyone else’s morale. But when a Gemini is down, it’s a very long way to the bottom. Gemini is a mutable sign and Mercury is (arguably) the most flexible of planets making it so that the sign of the twins is always feeling that sense of “what if?” and the more questions one’s willing to ask, the more unsettled one’s going to feel.
2. Virgo (August 21 – September 22)
This one might surprise you as Virgos seem to “have it all together.” At least on the surface! But Virgos—who like Geminis are a mutable sign ruled by Mercury—are often only pretending to be in control. Virgos are obsessed with making order out of chaos because they love to have a purpose. Virgos will move a literal mountain to help the people they love and insist that it was nothing. But if you pay attention, you’ll also notice that once Virgos achieve order, they aren’t satisfied. Virgos do best when they have a problem to solve which also means they’re always looking for a problem. When you try to pull them out of this mode is when the existential crisis hits. A Virgo’s mantra is, as Samuel Beckett once wrote, “Try again. Fail again. Fail better.”
3. Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)
Though many think of Sags as the party monsters and adventure seekers of the zodiac, these archers are also philosophers! Ruled by Jupiter, planet of professors and spiritual leaders, Sagittarius is always seeking the truth, and sometimes that search for truth does not set them free. Sagittarius is known for “disappearing” and whether that’s on an extended foreign vacation or into a pit of existential despair, we don’t know until they’ve resurfaced! Sags are at their best when they’re both seeking and teaching as going too far inward often leads them to question everything.
4. Pisces (February 19 – March 20)
Pisces are known for being the most sensitive sign of the zodiac. The fish really feel it all which is why they also can get very confused about which direction they should swim. Too many choices can leave them feeling overwhelmed and discouraged. Pisces are at their best when they are grounded and in their own body, but they’re often thrown off course by everyone else’s drama. Pisces seem spaced out but really they are incredibly self-aware which leads to a lot of questioning and doubt. Like Sagittarius, Pisces is ruled by Jupiter and can find their way back to the surface when they tap into that sense of hope.
