The Most Challenging (and Fun) Miami Workouts We Tried This Year

Hey, we deserve a little credit: We were a pretty active bunch in 2018, from beachside bike rides to next-level boot camp and cycling classes. Keep it going in the New Year by signing up for one of our all-time favorite fitness classes—boxing and water biking included.

6 Hybrid Workouts That Will Leave You Feeling Like Jell-O (in a Good Way)

Cyklejab Studio

This two-in-one workout combines upper-body boxing and lower-body cycling into a 50-minute class. You’ll spend 40 minutes on the bikes and bags, and do ten minutes of abdominal work to warm up and cool down. For an added level of competition, throw on a fitness tracker and display your stats on one of four large screens inside the workout room.

Redbike

In addition to blasting calories, this feel-good workout class gets the endorphins flowing. Bikes are free of screens, giving riders a 45-minute tech break. About halfway through class, you’ll pick up a set of hand weights for a ten-minute arm workout filled with biceps curls, triceps kick-backs and shoulder presses. Or stop by for an Arms and Abs class a few times a month for 20 minutes of arm work and a dedicated floor abs routine. (P.S. RedBike just opened a third studio in Midtown.)

Fitspace Studio

Using custom Megaformers, Fitspace Studio’s workout is like classic Pilates core work with a twist. It’s slightly faster and a lot more upbeat. You’ll listen to pop music, get your heart pumping and do a mix of strength training, slow and controlled core positions, and off-machine cardio moves like squats.

Waterbiking

Ladies, water aerobics is officially trendy. At WaterBiking Studio in Coral Gables, stationary bikes, treadmills and steppers are submerged in a large aqua-blue pool so that low-impact biking, circuit-training and boxing routines can be done in the water. There’s even pool-based Zumba. Bonus: While any of these classes will get your heart pumping, the cool water means you’ll feel more refreshed than sweaty.

Talk about an hour of power. Once you’ve picked up the basics of boxing—from uppercuts to jabs—you’ll blend your moves with power and speed in a high-intensity boxing and boot camp mash-up. Expect to work your entire body and leave feeling like Jell-O (but, like, in a good way).
