As someone with flat feet and a solid case of overpronation, finding the right sneaker to walk to and from daycare isn’t just about style—it’s about survival. Without the right support, my arches (or lack thereof) ache, my ankles wobble, and weird stuff starts happening with my knees. So when I set out to test three of the most buzzed-about arch-support shoes—the Brooks Glycerin GTS, OOFOS OOmy Zen, and New Balance Fresh Foam X860—I had high hopes and a healthy dose of skepticism. Could any of these shoes actually keep my feet comfortable and supported for the complete daycare circuit? Here’s my honest take on all three.

New Balance
These were my first pair of supportive sneaks after finally moving on from shoes that looked great, but just didn’t provide the full-coverage support my sad little feet needs. I’ve got high-maintenance feet, people. I walked into my local Fleet Feet as if I’d just been through a rough break up and spun an epic yarn for the salesman about my foot issues. While other customers were getting fitted for their marathon-running shoes, I was bemoaning how much it hurt to walk the dog. He told me to hop onto their nifty foot 3D foot scanning thingy, which informed him with the cold-hard data that my feet are bad, very pronated and as flat as flat can be. We got to shopping, ultimately landing on these New Balance gems. The moment my feet slid into them, I felt relief. I put my other sneakers in the recycled shoe box and walked home in them.
Now, since I purchased the v13s last year, New Balance has released a v14, that, according to Runner’s World, employs Stability Plane technology, which “entails a thin, EVA stability plate in the midsole,” offering more flexibility without “compromising the support that overpronators need to combat the inward rolling of their feet as they run. It also helps to make the midsole feel softer than that of the 860 v13, without being too squishy and lethargic.”

Brooks
Oo-oh heaven is a place on earth and that place is Brooks Glycerin GTS. We’re talking love at first fit. An all-enveloping support bestowed upon my pair of pronated yams that lifts, holds, cushions yet still allows for the toes to wiggle around—that is what love is. If in each passing year my shoe rack looks more and more like my father’s, so be it. At least my feet will be walking on clouds…clouds that are semi-firm, that is.
The “GTS” in the shoe name is the brand’s designation for “Go-To-Support,” which utilizes their “GuideRails” tech, made of two firm pieces of foam on either side of the heel to help reduce the rolling of the foot inward and shifting of the heel in the outward direction. This is what keeps my caving ankles looking and feeling good. “Think of bumpers in a bowling lane!” the brand explains. While walking my daycare-to-home and back again circuit, I feel like my legs are turbo-charged.

I’m usually not one for lace-less gym shoes. The intention is great, but usually the collar stretches, and I wind up gripping onto the soles of the shoe for dear life with my toes. Well, I’ve made an exception for the OOFOS OOmy Zen. Sans laces, the shoes are seamless, extremely lightweight and miraculously supportive. Sometimes while wearing these I actually stop and think, “Wait…how are these things holding me up?!” The brand chalks these wins up to their “recovery technology” that’s meant to support your arches, absorb impact and fight fatigue with their OOFoam™ design and “patented footbed,” and the shoes live up to the promise.
I will note, however, that like the OOFOS slides (my permanent house shoes that I bought two pairs of), the support doesn’t last forever. Also, because of the no-tie design, I wouldn’t use these shoes in a workout class or at the gym for fear of stretching out the collars and accidentally kicking a shoe at the instructor’s head. (They're also not designed for working out, but for recovery.) For everyday walking or indoor house shoes, these shoes are *chef’s kiss*.
