Looking for pet-friendly Airbnbs near NYC doesn’t have to be a needle-in-a-haystack type of search. Tons of dog- and cat-friendly spots are available within driving distance from the city, whether you want to escape to a Jersey Shore beach town, seclude yourself in a cabin in the Catskills or live in luxury in East Hampton. When searching for pet-friendly Airbnbs, beyond making sure the listing explicitly says “pet-friendly,” look for spaces with yards (bonus points if the yards are fenced-in), high walkability scores and dog-friendly restaurants nearby. Many vacation rentals are near hiking trails and dog-friendly beaches, too. Pro tip: Always message the host to make sure you’re not breaking pet policies (some places have size and species limits) and be prepared to bring your own dog bed or travel litter box. Most pet-friendly Airbnbs ask that animals stay off the furniture.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a reasonable Airbnb pet fee?

A reasonable Airbnb pet fee varies depending on the size of the space and its location. Aitbnb doesn’t have a policy enforcing a specific fee. So, hosts are left to decide what to charge. Fees help cover a deeper clean post-pet and covers their bases in case Lola chews on something she shouldn’t have.

Based on research conducted by MarketWatch, a reasonable Airbnb pet fee falls between $50 and $100, total. Some places charge by night, while others add a flat fee or a refundable security deposit.

MarketWatch reports that Hawaii and California are the two states with the highest premiums on pet-friendly Airbnbs; you’ll pay about $345 more in Honolulu and $246 more in Monterey if you’re traveling with pets. In New York, the median premium is $75 and in LA, it’s $84.

If you want a less pricey option, MarketWatch recommends Juneau, Alaska, where pet-friendly rentals cost roughly $25 less than Airbnbs that don’t allow pets. We recognize that getting to Juneau might be difficult with a dog, so check out Detroit and Nashville, two other cost-effective cities.

How do you search on Airbnb for pet-friendly stays?

When you log into Airbnb and enter your trip details at the top of the site, be sure to include the number of pets you’re traveling with. Some pet-friendly Airbnbs will work the pet fee directly into the rate listed, while others may tack it on as a separate charge. It’s always wise to message the host to ask about their pet policy.

What percentage of Airbnbs are pet-friendly?

According to research conducted by KeyData, a company that helps short-term rental owners manage and interpret their numbers, about one third of Airbnb listings are pet-friendly. There are more pet-friendly rentals available on Airbnb than VRBO (only 22 percent of VRBOs are pet-friendly).

KeyData also says it’s actually more profitable for Airbnb hosts to allow pets, even if it means a more expensive nightly rate. People love their pets! And we want them with us when we travel.
