Coffee, tea, hot chocolate—one should have all the standard warm beverages on hand during the holiday season. But why not make your guests feel that much more special by serving our recipe for mulled cider? Simply simmer apple cider with a few choice ingredients (spices! citrus!), add some hooch and you’re done. Bonus: Your home will smell amazing.
Ingredients
4 cups apple cider
4 strips orange zest (about 1 inch long)
2 strips lemon zest (about 1 inch long)
2 cinnamon sticks
2 cloves
1 star anise
4 shots rum (optional)
Directions
1. In a large pot, bring the cider to a simmer. Add the orange and lemon zests, cinnamon sticks, cloves and star anise, and simmer for 5 minutes or until very fragrant.
2. Turn off the heat, then cover the pot and let steep for 15 minutes. After the cider has steeped, place a strainer over a bowl and pour the cider through the strainer to remove the zest and spices. Return the strained cider to the pot and bring it back to a simmer.
3. If using the rum, place 1 shot in the bottom of a mug and top with a ladleful of warm cider. Repeat with the remaining mugs. If not using rum, simply ladle warm cider into mugs. If desired, garnish each mug with additional spices before serving.
