Avocado Shake with Salted Chocolate Sauce
Emily von Euw, author of Rawsome Superfoods, says her parents’ Indonesian roots inspired this decadent drink. “My parents lived in Indonesia for a number of years,” she says. “Their memories of avocado shakes with chocolate sauce (jus alpukat) immediately intrigued me. I researched traditional recipes—which often use condensed cow’s milk and sugar—and developed my own version with coconut milk and brown rice syrup.”
If you haven’t experienced Indonesia’s version of the avocado shake, you’re in for a treat.
Ingredients
Salted Chocolate Sauce
1 tablespoon melted coconut oil
1 tablespoon cacao powder
1 teaspoon brown rice syrup
Pinch of sea salt
Avocado Shake
3 avocados, peeled and pitted
1 cup coconut milk
½ cup ice cubes
2 tablespoons brown rice syrup
⅛ teaspoon stevia powder
Pinch of sea salt
Directions
1. Make the Salted Chocolate Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the coconut oil, cacao powder, brown rice syrup, sea salt and 2 tablespoons warm water until smooth.
2. Make the Avocado Shake: Add the avocados, coconut milk, ice cubes, brown rice syrup, stevia powder and sea salt to the bowl of a high-powered blender. Blend until smooth, adding more ice as desired to get the consistency you want.
3. Drizzle the sauce into glasses, pour in the shake and drizzle more chocolate sauce on top.
