Is that Wednesday Addams we see?! In a new promo video for the fifth and final season of You, star Penn Badgley teased that a few former characters may be making their grand return to the smash thriller series, including Jenna Ortega (Wednesday), who played Ellie Alves in season two.
Netflix Teases That This Fan-Favorite Character May Return for the Final Season of ‘You’
This weekend was the global Netflix Tudum event in Brazil, a special conference dedicated to fans, where stars from the biggest and most-highly anticipated Netflix series offer sneak peeks at what's to come.
When it was time for the You portion of the event, Badgley appeared on screen in a video clip, saying, “Olá! Brazil, I've heard you're on the edge of your seats, waiting and theorizing about the epic conclusion to You.”
He continued, “More importantly, you're considering what, or should I say, who Joe will come up against as he finally returns to New York. Though I can't say who just yet, we all know there are many loose ends from Joe's past. The question is: Who are you?”
After Badgley's comments, a number of past characters from the show flashed across the screen, from Dr. Nicky (John Stamos) to Sherry Conrad (Shalita Grant). However, we were most shocked when Ortega appeared on the screen. Does this mean she'll be returning for the final season?
In season two, Ortega played Joe's neighbor, Ellie, a fifteen-year-old girl who quickly befriends him and helps him build an online presence. However (spoiler alert), at the end of season two, Joe admits to her that her sister is dead and he murdered a man from their past. As a way to help, he begins giving Ellie monthly payments in order to survive.
But, that was the last we saw of Ellie. And while the character was supposed to return in season four, Ortega revealed that the filming overlapped with the production of her hit series, Wednesday. “I was devastated,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “I miss Ellie, and I've been wanting to go back to Ellie for a long time, but I was in Romania shooting Wednesday.”
Of course, Wednesday ended up being a ginormous hit for Netflix, becoming one of the most-watched shows in the history of the streaming platform. Unsurprisingly, the teen drama has already been renewed for a second season.
However, we've got our fingers crossed that this time around, Ortega finds time to film for both series.
