Venus Williams’s Sleek Met Gala Look Got Upstaged by a Proposal That Took Place Behind Her

Venus Williams may have attended the 2022 Met Gala sans her sister, Serena, but she still caught our eye with her chic, all-black ensemble courtesy of Chloé. However, while we were busy admiring the tennis star's outfit, there was a surprise proposal that took place behind her, which ended up stealing the show.

At the event, Williams was seen in a black, tailored blazer over a matching pantsuit, which she accessorized with similarly dark sunglasses and a feathery clutch to round it all out. She also sported a silver necklace adorned with green gems.

The outfit was styled by Law Roach, with the help of Gabriela Hearst, while the athlete's makeup (including those stunning eye sparkles) was done by Karina Milan. Meanwhile, her braids were styled by Nikki Nelms, and Tak Okamura did her nails.

While modeling this outfit on the steps of the Met, Williams came over to chat with E! News. It was during this interview that a surprise proposal took place right behind her. Check it out in the video below (starting right around the 45-second mark).

In the video, we can see that the Commissioner of New York City Cultural Affairs, Laurie Cumbo, is climbing the stairs when suddenly, she gets turned around and her boyfriend, Bobby Digi Olisa, gets down on one knee and pops the question.

During the moment, Williams was talking with a reporter about her arrival to the Met Gala, where she ran into Amy Schumer. When asked what the two were laughing about as they entered, Williams started cracking up and said, “Oh, I can't say. But our plan was to come in and all have these powerful, serious faces, but she makes a joke and I have no poker face, so I was like, ‘Please stop!’”

While Williams didn't notice the proposal taking place behind her, the crowd can be heard cheering in excitement toward the end of the video.

Talk about a showstopper. Congrats to the newly-engaged couple!
