Timothée Chalamet's Butter Yellow Oscars Look Is…a Choice

Timothée Chalamet is making it very hard for me to keep defending his outfit choices.

I defended the “Timmy Timb” all-pink look he sported at the Berlin premiere of A Complete Unknown, where he walked the red carpet in a pink tank top, pink baggy jeans and pink Timberland boots (while promoting his portrayal of Bob Dylan, nonetheless, who…dresses very differently). I even defended the pink puffer coat, Chanel bag and skinny baggy jeans combo he was spotted in while walking around New York City! But this outfit at the Oscars is a…choice, and I’m not sure if it’s a defendable one. 

Chalamet’s fit choice for the evening is already receiving not-so-pleasant reviews. PureWow Fashion Editor, Abby Hepworth, said her sister texted her: “He doesn't even look like butter, he looks like margarine!” Ouch. My mom said he looks like a banana. Double ouch. Oh, and Conan O’ Brien said, “You will not get hit on your bike tonight!” Triple ouch. Chalamet wasn’t the only one to give the butter yellow trend a try as Sebastian Stan opted for a button-down dress shirt in that shade, which worked slightly better due to the contrast of his black suit jacket and matching pants. 

 “As my dad noted after watching just the trailer, it’s abundantly clear that each performer really studied the specific eccentricities of how these musicians hold their guitars, move their hands and move their faces as they sing. And watching the film, you can tell they were performing live on set, an incredibly smart choice that, in my opinion, allows the audience to better connect to the music—which is really what folk music is all about,” she explained further.

At the end of the day, who cares what people think about your outfit when you could be going home with an Oscar in your hand?
