Is Malik Turning Into Randall? New ‘This Is Us’ Promo Sparks Theory

*Warning: Spoilers ahead*

After a one-year hiatus, the Pearson family has finally returned to NBC. And if there’s one takeaway from the sixth—and final—season of This Is Us, it’s that Malik (Asante Blackk) is following in Randall’s (Sterling K. Brown) footsteps.

The season six premiere aired on NBC last night and covered a variety of topics, including Rebecca’s (Mandy Moore) declining memory, Kate’s (Chrissy Metz) turbulent marriage with Toby (Chris Sullivan) and Nicky’s (Griffin Dunne) search for his long-lost love. However, there’s one couple that deserve a little extra attention: Malik and Deja (Lyric Ross).

Their relationship began back in season five, but their future was uncertain due to Malik’s plans for college. And now, season six has presented a new theory that seems likely: Malik will not only end up with Deja, but he’ll also follow in Randall’s footsteps as a successful politician.

It might be a stretch, especially since Malik hasn’t appeared in any future scenes with Deja. But based on the promo for next week’s episode, it seems the writers are trying to recreate Beth and Randall’s relationship with Deja and Malik.

In the promo, Deja travels to Boston to see Malik, who’s already giving us major Randall vibes. (ICYMI: Deja struggled with long distance in the season six premiere.)

At first glance, it looks like a harmless visit. However, many believe the upcoming episode is foreshadowing what’s to come for the young couple. Perhaps Deja’s trip will inspire her to move to Boston, so she can be closer to Malik. Or maybe it’ll make her realize that Malik is establishing a life without her.

Fans already know that Deja becomes a mom later in life, based on a flash-forward where she tells her sisters that she’s expecting. So, if her relationship with Malik continues down this path, then this is just the beginning of her love story with someone who’s equally ambitious as her adopted father.

This Is Us airs on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on NBC.
