Sofía Vergara Explains Where She Got the Nickname ‘Toty’

Sofía Vergara, 51, is best otherwise known as “Gloria Delgado-Pritchett,” thanks to her Emmy-nominated role on Modern Family. However, it turns out that, growing up, Vergara was given the nickname, “Toty,” which she decided to use for the name of her new suncare line. Now, the Colombian native explains why she chose that name in the first place.

“In Barranquilla, Colombia, where I come from, everyone has a nickname,” Vergara says at the beginning of the clip. “And mine was Toty.”

The America's Got Talent judge adds: “My older brother Rafael, rest in peace, couldn't pronounce my name and started calling me Toty, instead of Sofi.” (Vergara's brother was tragically killed in 1998.)

Thus, the nickname “Toty” was born and Vergara has decided to use the name for her new suncare line, to honor her brother. At toty, Vergara sells everything from Solaria Mineral SPF 50+ Sunscreen Serum ($42) to Ilumina CC Cream SPF 50+ Perfecting Fluid ($42).

“Growing up in a tropical place in the Caribbean, our life revolved around the sun,” Vergara added. “Going to the beach, being outside...we loved the sun. Little did we know that the sun was not loving us back. Suncare is my number-one beauty priority and I hope to make it yours too.”

Vergara launched the toty brand in June, and she explained the purpose behind the line in an IG post, which read, “Introducing toty, the vision by @sofiavergara. With a mission to protect your belleza against photoaging, we’re excited to reveal our 360° Suncare Solutions - combining sunscreen, skincare, makeup, and wellness. All you need is toty.”
