It may have been a quiet start to 2024 for the royal family, but that all changed today, which happens to be Kate Middleton’s 42nd birthday.

Earlier this morning, the royal family posted a striking portrait of the mother of three on their official Instagram account. For her special day, King Charles, 75, and his wife, Queen Camilla, 76, shared a still image of Princess Catherine, which was taken at the king’s coronation ceremony last year.

In the striking portrait, the Princess of Wales is smiling at the king just moments after he is crowned as the new monarch. For the occasion, Catherine is seen wearing a white Alexander McQueen dress with a red, blue and white robe (a nod to the British flag) on top. She also dons a Jess Collett x Alexander McQueen headpiece.

The caption read, “Wishing The Princess of Wales a very happy birthday today!” alongside a balloon and confetti emoji.

This time last year, the king and queen also dedicated a touching birthday tribute to the royal princess on Instagram. On their IG Story, the royal couple shared a photo of Catherine taken during her first trip to Wales under her new royal title. In the image, she is bending down to accept a gorgeous bouquet from a little girl dressed in a traditional Welsh costume.

Along with the snap, the king and queen wrote a special message to the princess, which read, “Wishing the Princess of Wales a very happy birthday today,” with a cake emoji.
