We turn to the royal family Instagram page for regular updates on King Charles, Queen Camilla and more, but sometimes, we get a little surprise from the account runners.
In a recent post, the royal family announced a new Roman garden that was unveiled by Prince Richard, the Duke of Gloucester, earlier this week. Seems normal enough, right? Imagine our surprise when the caption featured a cheeky reference to the recent “Roman Empire” internet trend.
“Talking of the Roman Empire…” the caption began. “The Duke of Gloucester has officially opened a new formal Roman garden outside the reconstructed Roman villa at Butser Ancient Farm in East Hampshire. His Royal Highness’s visit coincides with the 20th anniversary of the construction of Butser’s villa, which was built based on the archaeology of Sparsholt Roman Villa near Winchester.”
In case you're unaware, the “Roman Empire” trend began when women on TikTok started asking the men in their life how often they think about the Roman Empire. Turns out, many of these husbands, dads, brothers and friends think about it often.
Royal followers loved the reference to the meme, like one user, who commented, “Love to see the Duke on the socials! And LOVE the humour of the post. Well done!” Another follower wrote, “The Roman empire!!!!!!! [laughing emojis] Whoever runs their social media needs a raise stat!”
While Prince Richard helped unveil the new garden, the caption also noted: “The Duke, who has had a career in architecture and a strong interest in historic buildings, heard more about the development of building technology and house construction on a tour of the farm.”
FYI: The Duke of Gloucester is the youngest of King George V and Queen Mary’s nine grandchildren. He is currently 31st in the line of succession to the British throne.
