What Happens When You Lose at the 2020 Emmy Awards? Ramy Youssef Documented it on Instagram

Last night, the 2020 Emmys aired on ABC for the franchise’s first-ever virtual show due to the coronavirus pandemic. Although the nominees were sent a large black box that may (or may not) have contained a highly coveted statuette, we had no idea what happened to the losers…until now.

Last night, Ramy Youssef posted a video on his personal Instagram account, documenting the moment he lost the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.

The video features an Emmys staffer standing outside Youssef’s home, dressed in a full-blown hazmat suit. The person is holding a sparkly Emmy as she waves to the nominee before going on her merry way.

We don’t know exactly how the process works, but if we had to guess, we’d say the Emmys sent an employee to each of the nominees’ homes (within reason). If the celebrity wins, they immediately receive the statuette. If the actor loses, the hazmat person simply waves before leaving with the award.

We’re not totally surprised by the news, since ABC previously revealed the awards would be hand delivered by people wearing hazmat suits. Although the network made it sound like a joke, that definitely wasn’t the case.

Youssef captioned the post, “when u lose the emmy.” Yes, it’s probably a sore subject. But judging by the laughter in the background of the video, it’s clear the actor is handling the loss A-OK.

Youssef was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his Hulu show, Ramy, but he lost to Eugene Levy for Schitt’s Creek. Other nominees included Anthony Anderson for black-ish, Don Cheadle for Black Monday, Ted Danson for The Good Place and Michael Douglas for The Kominsky Method.

Hey, it could be worse. The Emmys could have enlisted a fly-by banner, but that’s just mean.
