Quinta Brunson can do no wrong. She's a short-girl fashion icon. She rocked the controversial wrinkled (crushed satin!) dress at the 75th Emmys. And, I hardly need to add that Brunson is the creator of the wildly popular series, Abbott Elementary. The show is up for five awards at the 76th Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series (contending with The Bear), Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Brunson and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her co-stars Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph. So, of course, Brunson's red carpet appearance was much anticipated. But when she showed up, I couldn't help but notice that her gown was show-stopping—and oddly reminiscent of an attendee of the 75th Emmys.

Brunson arrived in a gleaming, bow-laden liquid mermaid gown by George Schakra, styled by Jessica Paster. She opted for minimal accoutrements, with simple silver earrings, a bracelet and ring, along with soft, neutral makeup. A smokey eye added some oomph.

But, astute pupils of pop culture and awards season junkies won't be able to help but notice that her dress heavily alludes to one worn by Laverne Cox at the 75th Emmys, held earlier this year due to the 2023 Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Cox had donned a vintage 1989 Thierry Mugler Couture from Tab Vintage and accessorized with Dena Kemp & Rahaminov Diamonds jewelry. Both are mermaid gowns with pointed sweetheart necklines, though Cox's dress featured more texture and draping, while Brunson's giant bows gave her Sandy Liang coquette energy. But what's that saying? Great minds think alike.
