Striking New Photo of King Charles and Queen Camilla Walking Alone Shows Sweet Supportive Moment

A subtle gesture from the queen

Late last month, King Charles, 75, and his wife, Queen Camilla, 76, welcomed two very important guests to the United Kingdom: the Emperor and Empress of Japan. (Well, technically Prince William welcomed them first, but I won't get nit-picky here.)

During the visit, there were a number of elaborate royal events, including a gorgeous State Banquet dinner at Buckingham Palace, which gave us a stunning photo of the monarch and his wife posing with the Emperor and Empress. But with all the pomp and circumstance, there was another notable image that escaped my attention until now. And this one shows Charles and Camilla sharing a sweet, supportive moment.

The photo snapped by royal photographer Chris Jackson, who is responsible for some of the most iconic royal photos in modern times, came from the last day of the Emperor and Empress's visit, June 27. Just seconds after bidding their guests farewell, King Charles and Queen Camilla walked back into Buckingham Palace—and gave us the striking image above in the process.

In the picture, the couple walks alone up the stairs and Camilla places a gentle hand on her husband's back—a sweet and subtle show of support following a very important event (and during a very difficult time for the family).

The photo gives us a glimpse into the close relationship between the king and queen, almost a private moment accidentally shared in the public eye.

However, this isn't the only picture worth mentioning. As I said earlier, another image featuring the duo with the Emperor and Empress also caught my eye. In the photo, shared on the royal Instagram page, His and Her Majesty are standing next to Emperor Naruhito and his wife Empress Masako of Japan. King Charles is donning a black suit and Queen Camilla is wearing a gorgeous white dress with a tiara on her head.

But as my colleague noted, the image looked familiar. It very closely mirrored a picture from last year’s Diplomatic Reception, which featured Prince William and Kate Middleton.

With the royals seemingly back in the swing of things, and royal events occurring left and right, I very much look forward to even more striking family photos (and candid moments) to come.
