If Prince William asks for a meeting, you take it—at least that’s what Kevin Costner did many years ago, when he heard that Princess Diana’s eldest son was hoping to connect. According to a recent interview with People, Costner shared that, during a trip to England, he received word that the now-Prince of Wales wanted to meet up.
Kevin Costner Just Revealed the Sweet Thing Prince William Once Told Him About Princess Diana
Yes, even royals have celebrity crushes
Per Costner, “I happened to be in England, and I got this message that the prince would love to talk and I said, ‘What?’ And then I went, ‘Okay.’” When they finally got in the same room, William approached the Oscar-winning star, shook his hand and immediately revealed: “You know, my mom kind of fancied you.”
There’s a reason Princess Diana likely had Costner on her radar: Apparently, the actor had secretly approached the then-Princess of Wales, who was finalizing her divorce from Prince Charles in 1996, about collaborating on a sequel to his hit 1992 film The Bodyguard, which he co-starred in with Whitney Houston.
In fact, it was Sarah Ferguson, Diana’s then-pal, who made the intro between Costner and Diana. “It was so sweet,” he shares. “Sarah was the one that set this up. Sarah was very cool...when she could have been going, ‘Well, I’m a princess too. What about me?’ She didn’t do that at all. Diana and I began to talk.’”
Costner doesn’t reveal much more about the private encounter between him and William except to say that he found him to be “quite a young man” and that he has “such fond memories of who he was, how I was approached and what we talked about.”
First, Travolta, now Costner. Clearly, Diana had her finger on the pulse when it came to Hollywood’s leading men.
