Just two days ago, I saw Prince William and his wife, Princess Catherine, join forces to welcome their royal guests at the Horse Guards Parade in London, and I made quite a few interesting observations, from Kate Middleton's body language to a striking height difference. But now, the Prince of Wales is stepping up to represent his father, King Charles, at a special event in Paris as the latter continues his cancer treatments.

Earlier today—mere hours ahead of Middleton's carol service—Kensington Palace announced that he would be heading to Paris solo for the reopening of a historic monument. Per Hello! magazine, the prince's spokesperson said, "The Prince of Wales will travel to Paris tomorrow to attend the ceremony marking the reopening of the Notre Dame Cathedral. His Royal Highness is traveling at the request of His Majesty’s Government on behalf of the United Kingdom."

The re-opening of the famous landmark is taking place five years after the original Cathedral was partially destroyed by flames, due to a fire that began in the attic. Fortunately, over 500 firefighters were able to save the building's main structure and towers.

In addition to Prince William, French President Emmanuel Macron invited dozens of world leaders to attend, including U.S. President-Elect Donald Trump. Regarding the restoration process, Macron said in a statement, "This project was a human adventure of epic proportions in terms of building and prowess, involving the patient and dedicated work of a chain of talents working with one another passing the torch to those of the centuries to come.”

It's worth noting that this isn't the first time I've seen Prince William step up on his father's behalf. Similarly, when William traveled solo to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings earlier this year, he stepped in for the king and was accompanied by other world leaders, like King Frederik of Denmark, Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of The Netherlands.

To mark the occasion, the royal wrote on Instagram, "An honor to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day this week, starting today in Portsmouth. For the incredible bravery of the Allied veterans we say thank you—we owe our freedom to heroes like you."

I imagine the king couldn't be prouder of the future monarch.
