There was a hidden meaning behind Prince William’s latest shoe choice. And it all had to do with him wanting to be relatable.
This week, the Prince of Wales, 42, attended an event celebrating the three year anniversary of the NFL Foundation UK. The royal participated in a friendly game of American flag football, where he appeared cool, calm and collected while playing the role of quarterback.
In a surprising move, Prince William opted against his go-to dress shoes and wore a pair of white sneakers. According to body language expert and human lie detector Darren Stanton, the casual footwear symbolized an effort to fit in.
“He’s wearing trainers, a really nice touch,” Stanton told PureWow (on behalf of Betfair Casino). “He’s saying, ‘I want to be like you, I’m not separate.’”
Such a move is reminiscent of his own mother, Princess Diana, who not only knew how to rock a pair of white sneakers, but also made significant efforts to connect with the public as the People's Princess.
It’s worth mentioning that Prince William kept his suit jacket on during the game of flag football. But as Stanton noted, the casual footwear spoke for itself. “Yes, he has a suit on, but wearing trainers allows him to be more casual and move around better,” he explained.
Stanton also commented on Prince William’s competitive spirit, which is similar to that of his wife, Kate Middleton. “He’s got a very competitive nature, just like Kate,” the expert added. “You can see, when he’s playing around, in his face, he loves to take part in things like this and wants to do well, and he’s pretty good!”
Stanton continued, “He gets high fives from some of the others taking part at the event, and you can see some of the adulation on his face. He loves interacting with people, being part of the action, and loves to compete.”
