Prince William’s Surprise Trip to Poland Holds an Extra Special Meaning

Prince William just traveled across Europe to deliver a personal thank-you.

This week, the Prince of Wales, 40, embarked on a two-day visit to Poland. Prince William met with British and Polish soldiers who are training Ukrainian troops in the fight against Russia. Then, he traveled to Warsaw to meet with families, refugees and people who’ve opened their homes.

Prince William also visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where he laid a wreath. Per Hello! magazine, he also left a note that read, “In memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.” The visit held a special meaning because the royal was following in the footsteps of his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, who also visited the tomb during a 1996 trip to Poland.

According to People magazine, the purpose of the two-day visit was for Prince William to extend his gratitude to Poland for selflessly helping Ukrainians.

“Our nations have strong ties. Through our cooperation in support of the people of Ukraine and their freedom, which are also our freedoms and yours, these ties are further strengthened,” the Prince of Wales said. “I’m here because I want to personally thank the Polish and British troops working in close and crucial partnership. I also want to pay tribute to the inspiring humanity of the Polish people. You have opened your hearts as much as your homes.”
