Prince William recently joined his father, King Charles, and Queen Camilla for an emotional event.

On June 5, the Prince of Wales attended a commemorative ceremony to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings in Portsmouth, England. He shared a recap video on Instagram, which includes footage of the prince greeting His Majesty and the queen as they arrived at Southsea Common. They were also joined by veterans who participated in the Normandy landings.

He wrote, "An honor to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day this week, starting today in Portsmouth. For the incredible bravery of the Allied veterans we say thank you—we owe our freedom to heroes like you. #DDay80."

Prince William and the king have not been spotted together at many formal occasions this year. Both King Charles and the Prince's wife, the Princess of Wales, are recovering from cancer treatment.

During the event, the prince read a moving excerpt from the diary of Captain Alastair Bannerman, a D-Day soldier.

Prince William said, "Our guests of honor today are those veterans from the Normandy Landing that came from across our nation and from all walks of life, to join in the fight against tyranny, many of those that took up arms had never seen combat before. Some were still only in their teens. In their letters and diaries, we see their great strength."

He added, "We will always remember those who served and those who waved them off, the mothers and fathers, brothers and daughters who watched their loved ones go into battle, unsure if they would ever return. Today, we remember the bravery of those who crossed the sea to liberate Europe."

During the ceremony, King Charles also gave an emotional speech, with Queen Camilla standing beside him. Throughout the rest of the event, the royal couple and Prince William were seated together in the royal box.

The father and son's reunion comes just a few weeks after the king presented Prince Charles with a new title: Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps. The senior royals were all smiles and donned matching ties for the occasion.

Here‘s hoping for more father-son reunions soon.
