Prince Louis Steals the Show at Trooping the Colour with His Funny Faces—and His Balcony Dancing

Who says royals can't have any fun?

During last year’s Trooping the Colour, the British royal family came together at Buckingham Palace to take the iconic “Balcony photo.” Though Prince William and Kate Middleton were joined by all three kids on the balcony, it was the couple’s youngest child, Prince Louis, 6, who really stole the show with his silly faces. And fortunately, he’s back with even more this year.

Princess Catherine’s involvement in this year’s Trooping the Colour was initially uncertain because of her ongoing cancer treatment, however, she confirmed her attendance in a highly personal message posted to Instagram yesterday. Naturally, it made sense that with the princess in attendance, her children would be joining too.

Today, Prince Louis especially stood out. The young royal wore a navy blue suit jacket with shorts, a white collared shirt and a sky blue tie. But it was the prince’s funny faces and killer dance moves that really took the cake. In a video shared by a royal fan on X (formerly known as Twitter), the 6-year-old dances along to the proceedings while his mom, Kate Middleton, and his older siblings, Princess Charlotte and Prince George, stand right beside him on the Buckingham Palace balcony.

And of course, the young prince’s silly faces were on full display. These are my personal top five from this year’s celebration:

And last but not least:

Trooping the Colour is a ceremonial event that is the official birthday of the British sovereign. According to the official royal family website, over 1400 parading soldiers, 200 horses, 400 musicians and (of course) members of the British royal family come together to mark the occasion.

In case you didn’t know, this year marks King Charles’s second Trooping the Colour as monarch. Back in 2023, Prince Louis, Prince George and Princess Charlotte celebrated their grandfather’s first Trooping the Colour as king by riding in a carriage from Buckingham Palace to Horse Guards Parade. And when it came time for the Wales children to return to Buckingham Palace for the family photo, Prince Louis brought the laughs with his comical facial expressions.

Here are a few of my faves from last year:

And I can’t forget to mention the honorary “Salute” photo.

PSA: I will never get tired of Prince Louis’s silly faces.
