On Wednesday, November 8, Prince Harry, 39, and Meghan Markle, 42, met with a group of veterans and active-duty members at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, California. The event took place days before Veterans Day, which occurs on November 11 in the U.S. In honor of the special occasion, he paid tribute to his homeland with the poppy on his lapel.
Prince Harry Gives Subtle Nod to His Homeland During Pre-Veteran’s Day Appearance
A meaningful accessory
Images from the appearance were posted to Prince Harry and Markle’s Archewell site. In the photos, captured by Matt Sayles, the Duke of Sussex is seen wearing a black blazer adorned with a red poppy pin.
In case you're unaware, it is tradition for British royal family members to sport poppy pins ahead of Remembrance Day, a U.K. holiday that honors armed forces members who have died in the line of duty. (The holiday also happens to take place on November 11, the same day as Veterans Day.)
We've seen other royals sporting poppies this month too, like Kate Middleton, 41, who wore one while visiting Norfolk earlier this month.
The Archewell website shared more details about the outing: “Part of their visit included time spent with Operation Bigs, a first-of-its-kind mentoring program for children of military families, including active-duty, veteran, and Gold Star families. Mentors and mentees shared how mentorship is supporting their goals and ambitions, as well as the benefits of the community they have built through Operation Bigs. Founded in 2004, the program connects young people and families to mentors who can relate to the shared experiences and challenges faced by having a parent or parents in the military when they are on deployment and after they have returned.”
We love the subtle nod to your home across the pond, Harry.
