Prince Harry Just Made a Virtual Appearance—& I Noticed Something Super Surprising About His Outfit

I didn't expect this

Prince Harry seemingly paid tribute to his British roots during his latest appearance.

This week, the Duke of Sussex, 40, virtually attended a NATO meeting to discuss the Invictus Games. The NATO Military Committee gathered at the organization’s headquarters in Berlin, while Prince Harry telephoned in via video (which was displayed on a large screen for all to see).

Prince Harry wore professional attire for the meeting, including a button-down shirt, a suit jacket and a tie, but it was the red poppy brooch that really caught my attention.

The red poppy brooch is in honor of Remembrance Day, which marks the end of World War I. Although the annual U.K. holiday falls on November 11, it’s tradition for members of the royal family to wear the symbolic flower for the entire month of November. (FYI, poppies have been used since 1921 to commemorate military members who have died in war.)

Since Prince Harry is no longer a working member of the royal family, he isn’t required to wear the red poppy brooch—but he still did. Perhaps the Duke of Sussex wanted to send a non-verbal message to his former nation of residence (and his family) across the pond and let them know that he’s thinking of them. Or maybe it was pinned to his lapel from a previous event, and he forgot to take it off.

In my experience as a royals reporter, I’ve come to realize that there are no fashion accidents, so there’s likely a hidden meaning behind the brooch, beyond the obvious message of support for military members. What that is exactly remains to be seen.
