Prince Harry Keeps Wearing the Same Necklace—and I Can't Help But Think It's a Message to Brother William

This necklace has history...

When it comes to the strained relationship between Prince Harry and his royal relatives, there is clearly a lot playing out in public—and even more going on behind the scenes that we don't know about.

Earlier this month, Prince William and Kate Middleton seemed to offer a public olive branch with a birthday post to Harry on social media. Then, an insider report emerged saying that Prince Catherine reached out to Prince Harry secretly. There have even been subconscious connections, like Harry and William's mirrored body language at recent events.

But as a royal reporter, I can't help but think Prince Harry's cord necklace—which he keeps wearing over and over—is also a message to his brother. And, yes, the necklace has quite a bit of history.

In case you've missed it, Prince Harry has been wearing a lot of open-collared shirts as of late—which means we've all gotten a full-on view of his neckwear, a very specific cord necklace given to him by a friend from Botswana.

Most recently, Harry was seen sporting it on The Tonight Show during a segment filmed with Jimmy Fallon in a haunted maze. He previously donned it at a concert in California last week and throughout his tour of Colombia with Meghan.

But about that necklace's history...

In his 2023 book Spare, Prince Harry details an argument with his brother that left the necklace in question broken. Harry mentions in his memoir that William "grabbed [him] by the collar, ripping [his] necklace, and he knocked [him] to the floor. [Harry] landed on the dog's bowl, which cracked under [his] back, the pieces cutting into [him]. [Harry] lay there for a moment, dazed, then got to [his] feet and told [William] to get out."

The piece was originally given to the prince by a pal from Botswana and features three pendants—a tiger's eye stone and two silver plaques that are each etched with the cardiogram of the Prince's children, Archie and Lilibet—all on black cord.

Obviously, the necklace has since been repaired. But it's hard not to see it and think about its connection to William.

With the brothers currently estranged, it feels like Harry is donning the meaningful piece less as an "f- you" to Will, and more as a signal that he actually is happy and has his life together.

Doubtless, Prince William thought that Harry's decision to leave the royal family and move to America with his wife Meghan Markle was a mistake. But perhaps the piece—no longer damaged and hanging very publicly around his neck—is Harry's way of showing the world (and more specifically his brother) that this was in fact the right decision for him. What was broken (his life in the U.K., the necklace...) is now whole again.

Only time will tell what is next for the royal brothers. But change is certainly in the air (just ask Prince William's new beard). Let's just hope that change includes a royal reconciliation.
