Prince Harry Explains Why He Kept His Relationship with Meghan Markle a Secret

“[I learned] the pain and suffering of women marrying into this institution,” Prince Harry said. “I remember thinking, ‘How can I ever find someone who’s willing and capable to be able to withstand all the baggage that comes with being with me.’”

He continued, “Every relationship that I had was splattered all over the newspapers. And the person’s family, harassed, and their lives turned upside down.”

Prince Harry revealed that his connection with Markle was special from the start. Therefore, he wanted to protect it at all costs. “When I got to meet M, I was terrified of her being driven away by the media,” he added. “The same media that’ve driven so many other people away from me.” (And yes, the couple refer to each other as “M” and “H.”)

Prince Harry concluded: “I knew that the only way that this could possibly work was by keeping it quiet as long as possible.”
