‘Practical Magic’ Is Getting the Prequel Series it Deserves on HBO Max

HBO Max just green-lit a prequel for the 1998 film Practical Magic, and we’re surprisingly on board.

The streaming platform just announced that it’s developing an all-new pilot, titled Rules of Magic. While Practical Magic told the story of two witch sisters—Sally and Gillian—the new version will take place in the ’60s and revolve around their eccentric aunts-slash-caretakers, Franny and Jet.

Together, Franny and Jet must learn how to control their powers, all while trying to convince the town that they’re totally normal. (Easier said than done, amirite?)

Similar to the original movie, the pilot will be based on the bestselling novels by Alice Hoffman, Practical Magic (1995) and The Rules of Magic (2017). The series will be helmed by Melissa Rosenberg (Jessica Jones) and Dana Baratta (Private Practice).

The Practical Magic movie originally premiered in 1998 and starred Sandra Bullock (Sally), Nicole Kidman (Gillian), Stockard Channing (Aunt Frances), Dianne Wiest (Aunt Jet), Aidan Quinn (Gary) and Evan Rachel Wood (Kylie).

Although we don’t know if the original cast will return for the prequel, there’s a good chance it will feature a new group of actors, since it’s supposed to take place before the events in Practical Magic. However, that doesn’t mean that a cameo by Kidman and/or Bullock is completely out of the picture.

Hang on to your husbands, girls.
