One of my absolute favorite things about Oscars night is watching the red carpet. Not only do I get to see a variety of gorgeous looks that range from elegant tulle gowns to sparkly princess-inspired dresses, but as a bonus, I also get to see at least one fashion trend emerge. For instance, at last year's Oscars red carpet, at least three celebrities stepped out in eye-catching metallic ensembles. And at the 2024 Emmy Awards, several stars rocked bold statement earrings. But this time, I'm seeing quite a few geometric dresses.
First, Cynthia Erivo stole the show in a custom, dark green Louis Vuitton gown, which doubles as a sweet tribute to her Wicked character, Elphaba. The stylish number features a gravity-defying sculptural collar and wide off-the-shoulder detailing that adds dimension. In an Instagram story, her stylist, Jason Bolden, confirmed that the dress is also a nod to the late Hattie McDaniel, who made history as the first Black woman to score an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. He explained, “Tonight is for Hattie McDaniel. Hope this Dress Makes You Proud!! Love Jason & Cynthia.”
