Miley Cyrus Sings to Her Mom in Emotional New Video (Which Has 1 Million Views in Less Than 12 Hours)

Miley Cyrus, 30, first burst onto the scene when she was only fourteen, playing the titular Hannah Montana—a regular teenager by day and a mega pop star by night. Of course, while we watched Miley grow up on screen, she was also growing up under the spotlight, which wasn't always easy. Now, she’s singing about the ups and downs of her youth in her new single, “Used to Be Young.” The video, which sees Cyrus singing emotionally into the camera, was released at midnight, and in a matter of less than twelve hours, it racked up over 1 million views. In the clip, Cyrus walks into a dimly-lit room wearing a red, sequined bodysuit over a Mickey Mouse T-shirt. As she sings into the camera, her eyes start to well up. “I know I used to be crazy / I know I used to be fun / You say I used to be wild / I say I used to be young,” Cyrus croons.

Turns out, there was something off screen that was churning up all those emotions (besides the lyrics). As reported by Rolling Stone, Cyrus was actually looking at her mother, Tish, 56, while filming the clip.

“It's super emotional because I am kind of a mini-me of my mom and I could see her inside of the camera by using a technology where I could livestream with my mom from inside of the camera,” Cyrus said of filming the “Used to Be Young” visual. “So, we could see each other and as she was dancing it just made me cry, it made me laugh, it brought up so many real emotions and I think it's really letting people into true emotion, which I don't feel we get to see very much these days.”

Upon releasing the video, Cyrus wrote on Instagram: “This song is about honoring who we’ve been, loving who we are & celebrating who we will become.” Meanwhile, her mom commented, “I love you little and I’m so happy I got to be your Mom. We have been on quite the journey over the last 16 years and I cannot wait to see what’s in store for the next 16! Because where ever it takes you, I’ll be right by your side… Always.”

The “Flowers” singer’s mom actually got married this past weekend, where Cyrus acted as the maid of honor. Throughout the past sixteen years, Tish has acted as her Miley’s manager, and clearly they've remained close.

She's just being Miley, and we can never get enough of it.
