The Met Gala is considered one of the most glamorous nights in fashion, but did you know the attendees must follow strict rules?
That’s right, Anna Wintour has established a stern set of guidelines over the years. One of the most surprising is that attendees aren’t allowed to take selfies at the event. This rule is directly related to the “no cell phone” ordinance that is enforced once the stars arrive at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Of course, there is a small loophole for stars who simply can’t go without a photo—snapping a bathroom shot. A number of celebrities are guilty of this workaround, including Billie Eilish, who snuck a bathroom photo at last year’s event.
According to E! News, the attendees typically receive a notice that states, “The use of phones for photography and social media will not be permitted inside the gala.” A source told The Hollywood Reporter (via E! News) that “It has solely to do with guests' security and enjoyment of the event.”
Sylvana Ward Durrett (Vogue’s director of special projects) agreed with this notion, claiming that it reduces distractions. “Anna is sort of an old-school traditionalist. She likes a dinner party where people are actually speaking to each other,” she told The Post. “We aren’t sitting over people's shoulders, but if it’s an obvious thing we might gently remind them.”
This year’s theme is Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion. Curator in Charge Andrew Bolton told Fashionista, “The last time we did an exhibition, that was exclusively based on our collection 'About Time.' Throughout the years, [we've had] exhibitions where we try to reawaken costumes in our collection—usually conceptually, by interpretation and by juxtaposing historical and contemporary garments side by side to mutually inform and enliven each other. But for this one, we wanted to literally reawaken the costumes.”
Guess I’ll have to rely on the photographers to capture all the fashion from this year’s event.
