Melissa McCarthy Shares Extremely Rare Instagram Throwback from Her First Days in New York

Melissa McCarthy has provided us with no shortage of laughs over the years. Whether she's hoarding puppies in Bridesmaids or trolling an uptight Sandra Bullock in The Heat, the 50-year-old actress nails it every time.

However, we may have never been graced with McCarthy's talents had it not been for an encouraging friend. As it turns out, the actress was actually going to pursue a career in fashion design, and she studied textiles at Southern Illinois University. When she moved to New York City to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology, it was her classmate Brian Atwood (who is now a major shoe designer and model) who encouraged her to pursue comedy.

McCarthy shared a super rare throwback with Atwood on her Instagram account in celebration of the designer's birthday. The shot features the two celebrities (presumably in their twenties), sitting at a bar in New York City—and we are loving McCarthy's shiny silver jacket.

The Tammy actress captioned the photo with a personal message to her longtime friend. She said, “To the person in High School that said 'you are better than,' 'you can do this' and 'get on that damn stage and do what you do.' You changed my life, I am who I am because you were born! Happiest birthday to @brian_atwood. Also when we moved to New York, he said 'you cannot wear cheap shoes!' Cut to my parents paying off my first credit card bill!!! I love you!!!”

Atwood responded to McCarthy's post and said, “I love u @melissamccarthy.”

While the shoe designer encouraged McCarthy to pursue the world of acting, she hasn't lost her love of fashion. The actress actually developed her own fashion line, Seven7, back in 2015, with a collection of pieces in all sizes that are available at a variety of department stores. Meanwhile, her and Atwood's friendship has remained strong, with Atwood even being in McCarthy's wedding party.

We sure are thankful McCarthy met Atwood.
