Huge congratulations are in order because King Charles is taking on a brand-new royal previously held by his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II,.

On March 1 (aka St. David's Day), the Royal Welsh Regiment of the British Army announced that the 75-year-old monarch has been appointed as their new Colonel-in-Chief.

In a newly released statement (shared by People), the military regiment said, “HM The King has been pleased to take on the role of Colonel-in-Chief of The Royal Welsh regiment, in succession to the late Queen who held this role with great affection for 16 years.”

According to the announcement, the new title is “especially dear” to the king because his “first military appointment as Prince of Wales was as Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Regiment of Wales, a position he held for 37 years before their amalgamation in 2006.”

As we mentioned, this news was shared on March 1, also known as St. David's Day. The annual British holiday is the feast day of Saint David (the patron saint of Wales). And for King Charles, who is the former Prince of Wales, the timing couldn’t have been more fitting.

According to People, King Charles’s first military appointment happened at the age of 20. During that time, the future monarch was given the colonel position for the Royal Regiment of Wales—that is, until it joined forces with the Royal Welch Fusiliers and became the Royal Welsh in 2006.

This is not the first military role His Majesty has inherited from his late mom since ascending the throne. Back in March 2023, King Charles was named the new Colonel-in-Chief of the Corps of Royal Engineers. In honor of his new role, the King of England personally met with Lieutenant General Sir Tyrone Urch KBE (Chief Royal Engineer) at Buckingham Palace that same month.

Your mother would be so proud, King Charles.
