Delivering a public speech is hard enough already. So, imagine our surprise when we saw the viral clip of King Charles, 74, giving part of his diplomatic address to the French Senate in French (yes, French), making history as the first British monarch to ever do so.

Earlier this morning, the king gave a moving speech to the members of the French Senate, where he praised the unity between France and the United Kingdom. Part of his public address was shared on the royal family’s official IG page, and it gave royal admirers a chance to see the king’s impressive language skills in action.

“As neighbors, friends, partners and allies, there is no challenge to which we cannot rise, as we have done so often in the past,” he said at the start of the clip. “Let us stride forward with hope and courage—and let us do so together.”

Not only did his French dialect receive a standing ovation from the crowd, but it also garnered praise from fans. One follower wrote in the comments section of the post, “His French is so good!” Another person commended the king’s hard work and dedication, writing, “I give him a lot of credit, giving a speech isn’t easy when it’s your own language but to do it in French is really something.”

The king certainly made the second day of his planned trip to France one to remember. Yesterday morning, King Charles and his wife, Queen Camilla, 76, arrived at the Paris-Orly Airport in France and were greeted by the French Prime Minister, Ms. Elisabeth Borne.

During the couple’s three-day trip, they will learn more about the history and culture shared between the U.K. and France. So far, the king and queen have attended the Arc de Triomphe, watched a welcome ceremony performed by the French Air Force flying team and went to a state banquet held at the Palace of Versailles.

His mother would be so proud.
