Sure, King Charles may be a committed environmentalist and a painting enthusiast, but the 75-year-old monarch will always be a dad first.

Today, His Majesty reunited with his oldest son, Prince William, at the Army Aviation Centre in Middle Wallop to officially hand over the role of Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps. One striking photo taken during the joint meeting (and posted on the royal family’s Instagram account) showed the king proudly standing next to his son in front of a helicopter.

For the occasion, King Charles donned a gray tailored suit with a white buttoned-up shirt and a striped tie. As for the prince, the 41-year-old royal sported his signature navy blue suit with a white collared shirt and a similar striped tie.

The next slide showcased another striking photo of the monarch handing his son the official uniform hat of the Army Air Corps, which is the combat aviation arm of the British Army.

While royal admirers congratulated the Prince of Wales on his honorary role in the comments section of the Instagram post, some pointed out that the senior position was supposed to go to the king’s youngest son, Prince Harry

Let me explain: This military title was intended to be given to the Duke of Sussex, who served in the Army Air Corps during his service in Afghanistan. But because the Duke of Sussex stepped down as a senior member of the British royal family in January 2020, the title instead went to his older brother.

This meeting between King Charles and Prince William comes almost a week after Prince Harry told People through a spokesman that he would not reunite with his father during his recent trip to the U.K. (ICYMI: The Duke of Sussex flew back to England to mark the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games at a service held at St. Paul’s Cathedral on May 8.)

“In response to the many inquiries and continued speculation on whether or not The Duke will meet with his father while in the U.K. this week, it unfortunately will not be possible due to His Majesty’s full program,” the royal spare told the publication.
