Katie Holmes Speaks Out About Her Iconic Cashmere Bra & Sweater Combo: ‘It Looked Way More Glamorous than it Was’

Katie Holmes’s style profile skyrocketed in 2019 thanks in part to a certain sweater set.

Although the 40-year-old Dawson’s Creek alum has always been fashionable, she’s had somewhat of a resurgence in the last year thanks to her unexpected outfits and willingness to break fashion rules. Take, for instance, the now-iconic cashmere bra and sweater set Holmes wore while hailing a cab in New York with her 13-year-old daughter, Suri, last August.

As a reminder, Holmes paired the matching greige Khaite bra ($520) and sweater ($1,540) set with high-waisted bootleg jeans, black heeled mules and a black handbag.

It was about as laid-back luxe as it gets. Now, Holmes is speaking out about the bra seen ’round the world in an interview with InStyle.  

“Honestly, I wasn’t feeling so sexy. And I saw that and was like, ‘Sexy. I can do that!’” Holmes told the mag.

She went on to explain what made her buy the outfit in the first place, saying, “I thought it would be good if I was in a cabin sitting by the fire and wore the [matching] sweater over it. That’s how my brain works.”

Holmes also explained that she and her daughter Suri were heading shopping when the photos of her chic set were snapped. “We were school shopping, and I was just trying to hail a cab on Sixth Avenue. It looked way more glamorous than it was,” she recalled.
