2023 was undoubtedly the year of striking royal portraits. From the haunting photo of Prince William standing alone at dawn to a stunning portrait of King Charles with his sister, Princess Anne, the British royal family graced our social media feeds with incredible (and awe-inducing) photography. And before the year ended, royally-obsessed fans were given one final gorgeous camera shot of the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton

On December 25, 2023, Princess Catherine was photographed attending the annual Christmas service at Sandringham Church in Norfolk. The striking and intimate photo (snapped by photographer Stephen Pond) was shot from the back of the royal princess. While standing behind the king and queen, the royal mom of three strikes an elegant (and almost haunting) pose as she looks over to the side.

The Princess of Wales wore a royal blue outfit with a feather hat for the occasion. She was also joined by her husband and their three children: Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5. William, George and Louis opted for coordinating blue ensembles while Charlotte donned a forest green coat dress for the event.

The royal family then entered the new year on a quiet note. But that all changed this week when the monarch and his wife, Queen Camilla, posted a striking portrait (the first of the new year!) of Catherine in honor of her 42nd birthday.

On January 9, the royal couple posted a stunning photo of the Princess of Wales (taken at the king’s coronation) on the official royal family’s Instagram account. In the caption, they wrote, “Wishing The Princess of Wales a very happy birthday today!” alongside a balloon and confetti emoji.

We’re guessing a new year means plenty more royal portraits to come.
