Kate Middleton & Meghan Markle Just Stepped Up Their Fascinator Game for Commonwealth Day

Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle arrived at the 2020 Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey today in completely opposite (and kind of Christmas-inspired) looks, but they had one thing in common.

The 38-year-old Duchess of Cambridge arrived at the Abbey wearing a ruby red Catherine Walker coat dress, while the 38-year-old Duchess of Sussex stayed on the opposite side of the color wheel and sported a Kelly green caped dress by Emilia Wickstead. Middleton’s was a royal rewear (she last sported the coat during her annual post-church Christmas appearance in 2018); Markle’s vintage-inspired number is brand new. Middleton went monochromatic and Markle mixed shades and hues. But both duchesses opted for eye-catching fascinators.

As you’ll notice above, Middleton selected her velvet-trimmed Catherine Walker coat for the occasion and paired it with Gianvito Rossi suede pumps ($695) in a shade that beautifully matched her coat’s trim. She carried a small red velvet box clutch and completed the look with a Sally-Ann Provan flowered fascinator. It was definitely a statement-making piece.

Markle, on the other hand, accessorized her Emilia Wickstead frock with nude patent-leather Aquazurra pumps ($650), a dark green sold-out Gabriella Hearst bag and a tipped fascinator with a netting accent fashioned into a bow on the side. It was certainly a more ornate fascinator than we’re used to seeing the duchess in. At Commonwealth Day celebrations past, she’s worn a simple pillbox hat and a chic white beret topper. But, as evidenced by the switch up in processional protocol and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s impending royal departure, things are definitely different this year.

All we can say is, it’s good to see the royal Fab Four in the same place.
