Kate Middleton Just Had Her First Solo Outing with the Queen—but How Did It Compare to Meghan’s?

Royal shocker: In the eight years since Kate Middleton became a royal, she has actually never made a solo appearance with Queen Elizabeth. (Say what?) Well, that all changed today when the Duchess of Cambridge joined the queen at King's College London to reopen the newly renovated Bush House. (Royal bucket list moment, accomplished.)

Still, their joint outing got us curious: How did Kate's royal appearance with Queen Eliz compare to her sis-in-law Meghan Markle's from last June? Let's take a look back.

For starters, when—fresh off her nuptials to Prince Harry—Meghan bopped to Cheshire with the queen, she wore a cream-colored Givenchy dress with an elegant cape that covered her shoulders. (It was summer! Coats were optional!)

She also donned—or perhaps borrowed—a pair of delicate pearl earrings that belonged to the queen herself, a subtle nod to her new royal role, but also their blossoming relationship. (BTW, this was on full display as the pair were caught laughing, chatting and even whispering at the opening of the Mersey Gateway Bridge.)

As you'll recall, the queen, for her part, wore lime. Bold move, but also classic Eliz. (Candy colors, FTW.)

In comparison, Kate—who was at the mercy of Mother Nature and the bone-chilling winter weather (it was 40 degrees in London this week)—opted for a tailored and elegant Catherine Walker coat. (Her signature! It was fit-and-flare!)

Beside the queen, who wore bubblegum pink, she looked regal and smart. She topped things off with a fascinator. (Something Meghan left at home when she rode the royal train with the queen last year.)

Kate also did something Meghan did not: She shared a blanket with Queen Elizabeth en route. (Reminder: It was cold, but we'd say that this is royal proof they're pretty close.)

So, there you have it: Kate and Meghan's royal outings compared. And while their fashion choices were totally opposite, they both seem to have gotten along famously with their MIL the queen on their first solo ventures.

Will there be more? Our non-royal fingers (and toes) are crossed.
