John Legend Is Joining the ‘This Is Us’ Cast & Not Even Chrissy Teigen Knew

This Is Us is adding a legendary name to their cast.

During last night’s Golden Globes, a promo for the second half of This Is Us season four featured a quick glimpse of none other than John Legend, who’s serving as a guest star. Although little is known about his role, the 41-year-old EGOT winner appears to be playing himself. But how does he enter the Pearson-family fold, we wonder?

The previously under wraps news came as a surprise to fans and, more hilariously, his wife, Chrissy Teigen.

After watching the promo on TV, one fan reached out to Teigen via Twitter and asked for more details on Legend’s role. Ever candid, the 34-year-old model turned multihyphenate admitted that she had zero knowledge about her husband’s next foray into acting.

She responded, “I had no idea until now and still don’t get it? His song or himself?” Some fans joked that Teigen “should hang out with him more” or that she’d probably find out about Legend’s This Is Us role when “the cast is coming over for dinner in a hour” (this is a great joke about when he did just that with the Voice cast).

In the end, This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman came to Legend’s rescue and replied to Teigen’s tweet, saying, “It was supposed to be a surprise. Clearly he took that seriously. Will make sense next Tuesday promise.”

We’re holding you to that Fogelman, because as of now the only reason we can think of that Legend would make sense in the Pearson’s storyline is if he gave a special performance at Kevin’s (Justin Hartley) wedding.

Fogelman teased earlier this year at a fan event in August that “there’s a lot of secret new cast members who are going to be a big deal, coming up.” Sylvester Stallone, Ron Howard and M. Night Shyamalan have previously appeared in the series and Jennifer Morrison (Cassidy), Asante Blackk (Malik), Omar Epps (Darnell), Marsha Stephanie Blake (Kelly), Tim Matheson (Dave) and Timothy Omundson (Gregory) have joined the show as the plot expands.

This Is Us returns with season four, episode ten on Tuesday, January 14 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. We can wait to see what the heck John Legend is up to.
