John Legend Cries on ‘The Voice’ After Contestant’s Emotional Story and Stunning Whitney Cover

We weren't prepared for this on a Monday morning.

In a sneak peek video of the latest episode of The Voice, which premieres tonight at 8 pm/7pm central, one contestant performed a stirring cover of Whitney Houston’s “I Look to You” during the blind auditions—and it was so good that it got all the judges to press their buttons. However, when the contestant, named Dylan Carter, revealed the reason he chose this particular song, it got nearly everyone in the audience tearing up, including judge John Legend, 44.

“When I saw y’all turn around, I saw my mom,” Carter explained to judges Legend, Gwen Stefani, Niall Horan and Reba McEntire.

Carter explained: “[My mom] passed back in October and she wanted me to sing [that song] at her funeral, so I did it...I tried. But, I couldn't make it through it. So, this was the best second chance. I just made her so proud. Wow.”

Upon hearing this emotional context, Legend responded, “Well, now I'm crying, so.” And Stefani quickly agreed, saying, “Me too.”

Legend then said to the contestant: “That's very moving. We're all very grateful that we get to do this show and we get to meet people like you and we get to give you this opportunity to perform this song in tribute to your mother. And we all felt it too. I know your mother's proud of you, okay?”

In the clip, you can see a tear streaming down Legend’s face as Reba then gives her own praises to Carter and tells him a story about a connection between her and her mother.

However, the video cuts off before we get to see who Carter chooses as his celebrity coach. (Guess we'll have to watch tonight to find out.)
