hurricane dorian devistation

Hurricane Dorian has been raging through the Caribbean and up the U.S. East Coast, leaving thousands of homes, businesses and hospitals leveled in its wake. As of now, the official death toll is 20, but it’s not yet clear how many lives have been taken by the category five storm. Rescue teams have been working tirelessly to reach more of those who have been impacted, but many people are looking for ways they can help. Here, five things you can do to lend aid to those affected by Hurricane Dorian.

1. Choose a Charity

The Grand Bahama Port Authority’s Grand Bahama Disaster Relief Foundation is endeavoring to provide relief to island dwellers in need. The charity is accepting monetary donations and supplies of all kinds.

2. Bring Relief with Unused Household Items

Similar to the Grand Bahama Disaster Relief Foundation, the city of Miami has organized BahamaStrong, which seeks to help bring emergency supplies to Bahamians in need. They’re currently accepting donations of water, canned goods, can openers, mosquito spray, sunscreen, diapers, baby formula, first aid items, flashlights, batteries and small generators at several locations.

3. Give to the Red Cross

Every dollar counts, so the American Red Cross is raising money to directly help those devastated by Hurricane Dorian recover. The funds raised will also go to disaster preparedness as the hurricane continues to move north. The Red Cross is also accepting donations of shelter, food, water, medicine and communication devices, which are currently the most urgent needs.

4. Support Relief Efforts Via GoFundMe

A number of verified GoFundMe pages have popped up to provide financial aid to Dorian victims as the hurricane moves up the East Coast.

5. Connect Families with Hot Meals

Celebrity chef José Andrés’s World Central Kitchen is on the ground setting up kitchens in impacted areas so victims don’t go hungry. The foundation is accepting monetary support to keep the meal centers running.
