‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 3 Teaser Hints at a Major Twist We Didn’t See Coming

We didn’t think it was possible, but season three Gilead looks even bleaker than before.

Prepare yourself because Hulu just dropped the first Handmaid’s Tale season three teaser and it’s short (like 12 seconds short), but definitely not sweet. In the clip, we see a horde of Marthas walking in the street while Guardians keep a watchful eye. One of the Marthas turns and, lo and behold, it’s June (Elisabeth Moss).

As nearly anyone aware of the show knows, June is a handmaid—a fertile woman who’s sent to live and procreate in an affluent and influential Gilead family’s home.  Marthas are generally barren women who are placed in domestic roles. They wear green-gray robes as opposed to the handmaids’ vivid red ensembles.

When we last saw June in the season two finale, she had a chance to escape but ultimately opted to send her baby to safety with Emily (Alexis Bledel) in hopes of getting her little girl, Hannah (Jordana Blake), out of Gilead, too. Which begs the questions: Is June in hiding as a Martha to get closer to Hannah? Has she been punished for escaping and rendered barren? Or is there something more sinister at play?

Thankfully, we can look forward to seeing the full trailer in just a couple days. As the teaser noted, more will be revealed when “the big game” (aka the Super Bowl) airs on Sunday, February 3, at 3:30 p.m. PT/6:30 p.m. ET on CBS.

Fingers crossed Hulu also announces the Handmaid’s Tale season three premiere date. To say we’re eager for its return would be a total understatement.
