Emily Blunt Is Taking a Break from Acting (and the Reason Has Nothing to Do with the Actors’ Strike)

Earlier this week, the SAG-AFTRA members announced that they were going on strike, in a show of support with the Writers Guild of America members who have been on strike since May 2. However, when Emily Blunt revealed that she was taking a break from acting, it had nothing to do with the protest.

Of course, Blunt (40) has already shown her support for the strike, as she and the rest of the Oppenheimer cast walked off the red carpet as a sign of solidarity earlier this week. However, before the actors' strike began, Blunt had already announced she was taking a break from the industry in an effort to spend more time with her kids.

On the latest episode of the iHeart podcast Table for Two, which was released on Monday, July 10, Blunt discussed the difficulty of the work-life balance.

“It’s one of those things when people are like, ‘How do you balance it?’ I never feel like I’m doing it right, you know,” the Devil Wears Prada star said.

Still, she's finding that balance by taking time off. She told host Bruce Bozzi, “But this year I’m not working. I worked quite a bit last year and my oldest baby is 9, so we’re in the last year of single digits. And I just feel there are cornerstones to their day that are so important when they’re little.”

The London-born actress added, “And it’s, ‘Will you wake me up? Will you take me to school? Will you pick me up? Will you put me to bed?’ And I just need to be there for all of them for a good stretch. And I just felt that in my bones.”

Blunt and husband John Krasinski (43) share two daughters: Hazel (9) and Violet (7). The Quiet Place couple first started dating in the fall of 2008 and they tied the knot on July 10, 2010. They now live in Brooklyn with their two children.

Although Blunt is taking a break from the industry, she'll soon be appearing in theaters across the world. Her new film, Oppenheimer, hits cinemas on July 21. Meanwhile, she stars opposite Chris Evans in the David Yates-directed drama Pain Hustlers, which is set to hit theaters this October. Then, in 2024, she will see the release of her action thriller The Fall Guy and the fantasy comedy IF.

Enjoy your time off, Emily. You deserve it.
