Senior members of the British royal family are constantly on the go, so it’s not everyday that a member becomes the first to do something. For Duchess Sophie, that day has come.

Yesterday, the royal family shared a slideshow of photos on Instagram, featuring the Duchess of Edinburgh, 59, during her royal visit to Chad. The trip was a pretty big deal because it marked the first time that a member of the British royal family has visited the Central African country.

The royal family explained the significance of the duchess’s visit in the caption. “The Duchess of Edinburgh has been in Chad, becoming the first Member of the Royal Family to visit the nation,” it read. “As a global champion of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda and a supporter of the UK’s Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative (PSVI), The Duchess visited to witness the impact of the conflict in Sudan, particularly on women and girls, and to help draw attention to the deteriorating situation which is impacting Chad and the wider region.”

The caption continued, “In Adré, a town 400 metres from the border with Sudan, The Duchess: Visited refugee registration points with humanitarian workers, Met survivors of conflict-related sexual violence at Adré District Hospital, Spoke with grassroots women’s rights organisations, Met teenagers in safe learning spaces supported by Plan International. Thank you to everyone in Chad for your vital work!”

Cheers to the first of many firsts!
