'True Detective' Star Stephen Dorff Plays a Cowboy Cop Again in Fox's Gritty New Western 'Deputy'

Step aside, Roland West. Deputy Bill Hollister is here to save the day.

True Detective season three star Stephen Dorff put on such a stellar performance for HBO's anthology series as detective West that he's going to play another cowboy-boot wearing cop. This time, it's for Fox's new Western procedural drama, Deputy.

Directed by David Ayer, the show tells the story of Dorff's Deputy Hollister after a big promotion puts him in charge of 10,000 deputies in L.A. But the deputy is more comfortable holding a shotgun, riding a horse and going on raids than sitting behind a desk or canvassing for votes, which means he'll get himself into some trouble with the higher ups of the LASD.

"I don't know if I was born to be sheriff," Dorff says in the voiceover to the trailer. "But I was born to catch bad guys. And I know the only way to do this job is to not care about losing."

It looks sorta like The Wire meets Deadwood, with a bit of Shades of Blue mixed in. While it doesn't have any of the mystery or macabre crime investigation that makes True Detective so bingeworthy, Deputy does look to have some exciting action sequences and lots of firepower (ya know, if you're into that sorta thing).

Dorff stars alongside The Tick's Yara Martinez, Cougar Town's Brian van Holt, The Killing's Bex Taylor-Klaus and Desperate Housewives's Mark Moses.

Fox hasn't revealed the release date yet, though it did specify that the show would air "midseason," meaning sometime in early 2020.

Westworld, His Dark Materials and now, Deputy. See? Post-Game of Thrones TV world ain't so bad, is it?
