Denzel Washington and King Charles Just Met and It Was Not *Not* Awkward

I'd be nervous too shaking hands with the king

I'd say it's a rare thing for King Charles to meet and greet non-royals, but that would be a total lie. The man is often out and about, shaking hands with and chatting with members of the public.

Take, for example, his royal tour of Australia and Samoa with wife Queen Camilla. The now-76-year-old monarch (yes, his birthday was yesterday and, yes, the family released a new portrait) made a number of public appearances during the tour where he met dozens and dozens of complete strangers. So, needless to say, the man is used to making small talk...which is why it's so surprising that he was just part of such an awkward interaction with A-list actor Denzel Washington.

The famous men met and shook hands on the red carpet at the London premiere of Gladiator 2 and, well, I'm sweating just thinking about how strangely it went.

As is clear from the video above, Washington wasn't exactly sure of the proper royal protocol when meeting the king (but, I dunno, I might've asked someone beforehand?). As the monarch approached, the two shook hands as the Philadelphia star stammered, "I didn't know if I was supposed to grab you or not, but my pleasure."

King Charles then attempted to save the situation and inquired about Washington's role in Gladiator 2. Sadly, the awkwardness continued, with the movie star finally joking about his character, "I'm a lovely man, you'll see. I'm a lovely chap and...doing my best."

But it didn't stop there...

Then, it was King Charles's turn to make things awkward. There was a long pause (where, TBH, I wanted to yell, "SOMEBODY SAY SOMETHING") before the king finally ended things with, "You've been in so many films. It's fantastic."

Your Majesty, I know you're king and all, but you couldn't think of one specific film Denzel Washington was in that you could mention? I know you and the royal fam watch TV so you're bound to have seen Fences at some point...

At least the interaction made it clear that if I ever meet a royal, it can't go worse than it did with Denzel.
