Demi Lovato’s Grammys Performance Was Powerful Beyond Words

Demi Lovato left viewers and the audience at the 2020 Grammy Awards misty-eyed with her highly emotional performance of her song “Anyone.”

The 27-year-old two-time Grammy nominee took the stage accompanied by a piano to sing a powerful ballad about her struggle with addiction. Not only was it a meaningful moment because of the song she was singing, but this also marks the first time Lovato has performed since her relapse and subsequent overdose in 2018.

Understandably, Lovato grew tearful at the beginning of her performance and had to re-start the song.

Lovato wrote the song several years ago when she was struggling with her sobriety. She sang, with a single tear running down her cheek, about how she “confided in alcohol” and “told secrets ’til my voice was sore.” Her lyrics went on to say “Lord, is there anyone? I need someone. Anyone, please send me anyone.”

In an interview on New Music Daily with Zane Lowe last year, Lovato said, “I almost listen back and hear the lyrics as a cry for help. And you kind of listen back to it and you kind of think, how did nobody listen to this song and not think, ‘Let’s help this girl.’”

She went on to admit, “I was recording it in a state of mind where I felt I was OK, but clearly I wasn’t. I even listen back to it and I’m like, ‘Gosh, I wish I could go back in time and help that version of myself.’”

As Lovato concluded her stirring performance, the audience supported her with a hearty standing ovation.

That’s what we call a strong performance from an even stronger woman.
