David Beckham and his wife, Victoria, are proof that true love does exist.
Netflix just released the brand-new documentary Beckham, which offers a rare glimpse into David’s personal life and professional career as a football (or “soccer” to Americans) player. The athlete, 48, also shared never-before-heard details about his relationship with the Spice Girl, 49, including how he knew she was “the one” before he even met her.
In the first episode, David revealed that he was smitten from the moment he saw the Spice Girls on TV. “I turned around to [friend Gary Neville], and I went, ‘See that one there? I’m gonna marry that one,’” he said. “And we’re laughing and joking. I’m like, ‘No, I’m gonna marry that one. The Posh one. The one in the black dress.’”
Shortly after this conversation, Victoria and Mel B (Sporty Spice) attended one of David’s games. Although Victoria didn’t—and still doesn’t—like football, she had ulterior motives for the sporting match.
“I am not into football at all. I wasn’t into football then. I am not into football now. But I’d seen pictures of him in magazines, and he’s obviously a really good-looking boy,” Victoria explained. “The fact that I went to the game really was just to kind of...some would say ‘stalk’ him. I would say ‘see’ him.”
David admitted that it was love at first sight, saying, “That first time that I speak to her, I just fancied her.”
As expected, the feeling was mutual. “I just fancied him, and it was as simple as that,” Victoria added. So, she made a bold move that ended up paying off. “I wrote my number on an airplane ticket, and I remember saying, ‘You better call me,’” she said.
The rest, as they say, is history.
