The difference is small but important

Daniel Craig is one of the most well-known actors. Not only did he transform the James Bond franchise, but he also broke records with Knives Out. (FYI, there's a third movie on the way.) And yet, the world has been pronouncing his name wrong for his entire career.

Earlier this month, the 56-year-old actor appeared on an episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. During the interview, Craig revealed that the talk show host has pronounced his name wrong for all six of his The Late Show appearances.

“I have a bone to pick with you,” he told Colbert. “Say my name.”

When Colbert recited the actor’s name, Craig confirmed that he’s saying it incorrectly. Craig joked, “I don’t say Colber-t.”

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo star went on to explain that his last name is not pronounced “Cregg.” It’s pronounced “Cr-ayg.” He added, “Daniel Cregg…Daniel Cr-ayg.”

Colbert admitted that there is a difference (albeit small). “I hear the difference,” he said. “That is subtle, and I apologize.”

The talk show host proceeded to poke fun at the mishap, adding, “Daniel Cregg, f*** that guy, Daniel Cr-ayg, I’m so sorry please accept my apology.”

Colbert added, “You can call me Colber-t if you want.”

Colbert went on to share the origin story of his last name, which has a silent “t.” “Honest to God, my dad had been a Colber-t, but he wanted to be a Colbert but he was a junior so his father says to him, ‘If you say your name the French way, they’ll think you don’t want to be my son,’” he explained. “So, my father said to all of us in the family, and there were 11 of us, he said, ‘You can be Colber-t or Colbert whatever you want.’”

I’ll never look at either of their names the same way again.
