There are certain scenes from classic rom-coms that’ll never get old. Like when Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo perform “Thriller” in 13 Going on 30. Or when Julia Roberts gets revenge on an evil saleslady in Pretty Woman. I used to think that these scenarios rarely play out in real life, but Cher just proved me wrong.
In an excerpt from Cher: The Memoir, Part 1 (courtesy of People magazine), the 78-year-old singer recalled the time she had a real-life Pretty Woman shopping experience.
At the time, Cher wasn’t a huge celebrity. Her and Sonny Bono’s “I Got You Babe” was gaining popularity, but it hadn’t catapulted them to stardom (at least not yet). Cher explained that she was shopping near Rodeo Drive when she saw “an amazing pantsuit with a psychedelic check pattern and a big red stripe down the front.”
Cher walked into the store and was immediately dismissed by the sales associate, who assumed she couldn’t afford the pantsuit (which came in three colorways). The singer added, “She took one look at me, said, ‘It’s very expensive, miss,’ and turned and walked away.”
Cher continued, “She was so dismissive of me in my little crop top and bell-bottom pants that I lost patience.”
In a badass move, the singer told the sales associate that she would take one in “every shade.” Cher admitted that the price was “more than I ever thought anyone could pay for anything, but it was worth it to see the look on that bitch’s face.”
Cher’s story is strikingly similar to Roberts’s experience in Pretty Woman, when her character, Vivian, has a nearly identical exchange with a saleswoman on Rodeo Drive. In the movie, Vivian leaves the store and returns the following day in an expensive outfit. She tells the sales associate that she made a “big mistake, big—huge!”
